Music & Dance
The Nadim Dlaikan Ensemble presents the best of classical, contemporary, and traditional music of the Arab world. The group came together as a result of a request from Dearborn-based ACCESS (Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services) to play at a gig. Nadim located musicians drawn from a variety of different Arab nations and the group, which features the finest artists on the local scene, was launched. Using acoustic instruments such as the oud, kanoun, kamajah, nye, and tabli, the ensemble explores its diverse musical heritage. For Arab-American audiences, the musicians know (and are expected to know) and play traditional and classical music for all nations in the Arab world. Their performances outside the community take the music heard most often in wedding halls, private clubs, and family celebrations, and share it with a larger public audience. The ensemble’s audience ranges from the Library of Congress and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to folk festivals across the nation to small and large community celebratory events. The ensemble, an affiliation of busy professional artists, is dedicated to the perpetuation and enjoyment of Arabic classical and traditional musical genres in America. Nadim (ensemble leader, nye, mijwiz, mizmar) was honored with a Michigan Heritage Award in 1994 and a National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellowship Award in 2002 and Abdul Karim Bader (oud) is a 2006 recipient of the Michigan Heritage Award. At the 2006 festival, they are joined by long-time fellow ensemble members Mustafa Atat (tabli) and Johnny Sarweh (qanun) who is also a highly regarded instrument maker. Links coming soon |
