Phava

Chicago, Illinois

African American Gospel

The 5 person Gospel group, Phava

This a capella group got its start performing with the gospel plays "Piece of My Soul" and "Grassroots to Glory," which chronicled the roots of gospel music from slavery to today. Since then, Byron Willis (tenor), James Rushing (tenor), Llou Johnson (bass and leader), Jesse Stansford (tenor), and Al Engram (baritone) have become a Chicago favorite, performing traditional gospel hymns, spirituals, and songs made popular by groups like "The Five Blind Boys of Alabama."
